Memory and Study with Peter Eyland

These are the three "R"s of memory

Retention

input phase

It is identifying and recognising what is to be stored.

Recognition

processing phase

It is about knowing, awareness, and relating to experience.
Items can be stored in a jumble like clothes thrown in the bottom of the wardrobe or identified by some association.
"In fourteen hundred and ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue"
"Sicily kicked by Italy"
"Egesta suggesta Athena for one mate" (Alliance between Athens and Egesta in 418 BCE)

Recall

output phase

It is about using association to find the stored item.

Here are some factors affecting memorisation.

Pre

Relaxed attitude
Belief in your capacity
Interest, emotional need to remember

During

Actively notice
Look for anything unusual
make associations and triggers
make images, add emotion

Post

Revision, practice

Study is an active grappling with the subject, not a passive read

Preparation

Make friends
Make time

browse for feel/style/interest
set aside regular times

Application

Study

structure
ideas
detail

Learn

do problems
reinforce associations

Revise

do more problems
simplify
